Touriga Nacional is a variety of red wine grape from Portugal. Widely planted in Australia for production of fortified “port” style wines. As a single varietal there is only a very small production in a Australia. However, this is growing as it suits the warm Australian climate. Most of the producers originally planting it to make fortified wines are now producing red table wines.
Despite the low yields from its small grapes, it plays a big part in the blends used for ports, and is increasingly being used for table wine in the Douro and Dão. Touriga Nacional provides structure and body to wine, with high tannins and concentrated flavors of black fruit.
