Shiraz

Shiraz is a red grape variety. It is the most widely planted variety in Australia, and helped put it on the wine map. It is an adaptable grape that has distinctly regional characteristics from elegant, peppery cool climate styles to sweet and chocolatey (McLaren Vale), muscular, and ripe-fruited (Barossa), to savoury and rich (Hunter Valley). Shiraz was one of the first vine varieties to arrive in Australia in 1832 and is grown in most regions. However, its home is the Barossa Valley where old vines date back to the 1860's.

The classic, truly Australian blend is Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, but it is also blended with Grenache and Mourvedre (GSM) in warmer climates. In recent years it is increasingly being blended with Viognier to create the Shiraz/Viognier blend.

Shiraz's home is in the Northern Rhône's, Hermitage, Cote Rôtie and Cornas, in France. It is now also grown extensively in the Southern Rhône where it is blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre to produce the great red wines of Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas amongst others.

KILIKANOON 'ATTUNGA 1865' SHIRAZ 2006, 750ml (Bottle)

  • Aged 25 months in 100% new French hogsheads.
  • Notes of creosote, blueberries, crushed rocks, and acacia flowers.
  • While it possesses extraordinary richness, what the taster gets is a sense of definition, elegance, finesse, and tremendous intensity. It appears to be seamlessly constructed, but I suspect more tannin will emerge once it has had some time in a cold cellar.

ROLF BINDER HANISCH SHIRAZ 2006, 750ml (Bottle)

  • This is Rolf Binder's Flagship wine and the experience will be a memorable one.
  • This Shiraz is opaque dark purple and opens with a brilliantly perfumed and intense ripe blackberry bouquet with hints of pipe tobacco.
  • A deep red-purple, this is a very rich fruit-forward wine, showing some oak and spice. An immediate attack of fruit with depth. It is not overpowering, but harmonious, with a rich core of firmness that makes it stand out. A great wine with harmony and depth, and a lovely persistence of fruit.

BINDI 'PYRETTE HEATHCOTE' SHIRAZ 2010, 750ml (Bottle)

  • It will improve in harmony and complexity for at least five years and live well beyond. This wine spent eleven months in barrel, 15% new and was on lees for ten months. Michael Dhillon
  • Aromas of ripe red cherry, raspberry and savory, earthy, spicy elements are immediately evident and there are subtle layers of flavour lurking. Graphite and licorice and a 'cool' sweetness of ripe fruit.
  • The palate is fresh, seamless and long. The balance between fruit ripeness and purity and restraint from spicy, savoury aromas elevates this complex wine from the fruity/oaky style to a very serious wine of intensity, structure and complexity.
