Nebbiolo is the red grape behind the famous “King of Wines, Wine of Kings” Barolo and also Barbaresco. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in Langhe.
Italian winemakers compare it to Pinot Noir. A notoriously difficult grape to grow, it requires sheltered south facing sites and performs best on the well-drained soils in the DOCG zones of Barbaresco and Barolo.
Nebbiolo is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont, although there are small amounts grown in Australia in the King Valley and McLaren Vale.
Nebbiolo is a late ripener and produces wine of high acidity and with high tannins. The best Barolos and Barbarescos are perfumed with aromas of tar, rose, mint, chocolate, liquorice and truffles. They age brilliantly and the very best need ten years to show at their best.
