PENFOLDS 'GRANGE' 1998

  • The 1998 vintage is predominantly Shiraz (97%) with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%).
  • The nose is youthful and intense with dark, ripened Satsuma plum fruits rising above a base of liqueured dark chocolate and icorice. Overtones of malt, toasty barrel ferment and nutty oak meld effortlessly into an exquisitely aromatic offering.
  • The palate displays intense layering of fruit - raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry - laced with licorice and oak. The power of the fruit at the fore is balanced with ripe velvety tannins, offering an alluring even-textured palate with remarkable length.

PENFOLDS 'RWT' SHIRAZ 2004

  • This is as impressive an RWT as that from the 2002 vintage - each sip (glass?) is better than the one before.
  • Aromatics leap from the glass - sweet fruits, with blueberry to the fore. Spices and a suggestion of cedary oak court the regionally proclaimed Barossa Valley Shiraz varietal notes. Complex, and invitingly generous.
  • The palate is at once opulent, juicy and mouthwatering - a compote of assorted berries (red and blue), Satsuma plum and cherry. Dark pepper spices adorn the back palate, and the tannins are engulfed by the above-mentioned fruit rush. The fruit sits effortlessly in 69% new oak, adding another dimension to the structural and flavour layers.
