"Glowing golden-yellow. My host claimed that this wine was rather closed at the time. By ordinary standards, I found it anything but closed. Amazingly complex, with nothing less than marmalade, apricot, lemon, orange and lemon butter. Despite all this, an elegant wine – not too sweet or syrupy. The acid balance was excellent, and the intensity and length were incredible. A five minute finish. Remarkably, no oak characters, despite three and a half years in new oak. Drink it in twenty years, but don’t be afraid to leave it for one hundred. I have no doubt that it will evolve to become a 100 point wine in time." - Tyson Stelzer

"Compared with the flamboyant aromatics of the 1997, Yquem's 1996 plays it closer to the vest, although there is a lot going on. Light gold with a tight but promising nose of roasted hazelnuts intermixed with creme brulee, vanilla beans, honey, orange marmalade, and peaches, this medium to full-bodied offering reveals loads of power in its restrained, measured personality. There is admirable acidity, weight, texture, and purity in this impeccably made Yquem. However, patience will be a virtue." - Robert Parker.
